Strange Brew: Maui Brewing Company

At the first crack of the can you immediately get a sense what this beer is about – coconut, and more specifically toasted coconut – which you can smell even before you bring it to your lips to taste. While porters might be intimating to some, this is the one that will change you preconceived notions about them.  Pouring with a rich, dark, almost black color with a deep brown head, it’s not heavy like most people think dark beer are, but rather very smooth, almost creamy and extremely drinkable beer – which not only has its very distinct toasted coconut taste, but also contains notes of chocolate and a slight bitterness from the hops.

Brewer’s Description:

  • Bikini Blonde Lager – Our filtered Munich Helles Lager brewer with floral hops and Pilners and Munich Malts. This is the closest thing to an American lager from Maui Brewing Co. but not skimpy on flavor. Bold, smooth and refreshing!
  • Big Swell IPA – Our handcrafted India Pale Ale brewed with four different kind of Northwestern hops and malted barley…dry-hopped to perfection. Its flavor begins smooth and malty and is followed with a big burst of dry-hopped flavor.
  • CoCoNut Porter – Our CoCoNut Porter is a fresh handcrafted robust porter brewed with six varieties of malted barley, hops and hand-toasted coconut. It begins with a malty-toasted coconut aroma followed by a rich, silky feel with tastes of dark malt, chocolate, and hints of coffee. It then finishes with flavors of coconut and hoppy spice to balance the finish.

Availabilty: Six packs in Hawaii, California, Oregon and select online retailers

  1. I to enjoyed their beer at Festival 8.. Big Swell was on the daily list even though it was almost $9 a bucks a pop at the festival. It was delicious and worth every penny. Was great to be at a show with a great beer selection.
