B List: 10 Reasons You Must Download This Phish Show – April 29, 1993

9. The Makisupa Bustout

[audio:https://glidemag.wpengine.com/hiddentrack/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/makisupa.mp3]

The white-boy reggae groove Makisupa Policeman disappeared from Phish’s repertoire for 323 shows starting in 1990. The tune made its triumphant return in the middle of Weekapaug Groove at this show. Both the segues into and out of Makisupa are extremely well played and it has been a staple of the catalog ever since.

8. Holy Antelope, Batman

[audio:https://glidemag.wpengine.com/hiddentrack/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/antelope.mp3]

For the closer of the first set, Phish rocks out an Antelope that moves from one cool theme to the next with a quickness. At the 4:30 mark, Trey settles in on a progression and waits for his band mates to follow him eventually leading to a sweet jam on Pink Floyd’s Money.

7. My Friend, My Friend Encore!?!?!

As if this concert was sick enough, when the band returned for the encore they treated the crowd to the first My Friend, My Friend encore. Seventeen years later it remains the only MF, MF encore they’ve ever played. Talk about an exclamation mark. [Note – The Audio of This Track Is Missing From The Recording]

6. A Relentless Mike’s Song

[audio:https://glidemag.wpengine.com/hiddentrack/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/mikesmakigroove.mp3]

For those folks who think Mike’s never really hit its stride in ’09, listening to this version may depress you. From the beginning of the song – when Trey stumbles upon a variation of the riff he normally plays and rides it through to the jam – to the end, this take on Mike’s never lets up.

We hear Mike and Trey at their best, connecting on various progressions and pushing each other throughout. You can also hear the two of them hook up on what sounds like a predecessor to Simple, a tune that wouldn’t be performed by Phish for another year. There’s also a few other teases, but we’ll let you pick ’em out.

5. Shout out to the Burlington Folks

[audio:https://glidemag.wpengine.com/hiddentrack/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/terrapin.mp3]

Fish breaks out the vac to perform Syd Barrett’s Terrapin towards the end of this show. Before he starts to sing, he dedicates the song to all his friends in the audience who came from Burlington. The whole crowd erupts making it pretty clear most of the crowd made the trek from Phish’s hometown.

4. I’ve Got Spurs That Jingle Jangle Jingle

[audio:https://glidemag.wpengine.com/hiddentrack/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/hydrogen.mp3]

I Am Hydrogen is a tune that usually doesn’t vary too much between versions. This take on the beautiful instrumental is one of the more unique versions as Trey jams on Tex Ritter’s I’ve Got Spurs That Jingle Jangle Jingle towards the beginning of the tune while Page and Mike back him up with what sounds like Happy Trails.

3. Stumbling on the Spin Doctors

[audio:https://glidemag.wpengine.com/hiddentrack/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/yamar.mp3]

On May 5, 1993, – five shows later – Trey teases Two Princes by the Spin Doctors during his Ya Mar solo. At this show, Trey stumbles upon the Two Princes theme at the 6:04 mark – a discovery that probably led to the teases a few shows later. If you blink you’ll miss it, but us Phish fans are suckers for the small details.

2. Having Fun With a Mistake

[audio:https://glidemag.wpengine.com/hiddentrack/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/yamar.mp3]

Speaking of the Ya Mar, poor Big Red asks “Leo” to “take it” a bit before it’s time for Page’s solo, so Trey makes the most of it yelling “don’t play it yet” and “keep not playing it” before it’s finally time for Leo to take it. Mike and Trey are having so much fun with the faux pas that they keep talking about it during Page’s solo.

1. The Ultimate In Machine Gun Trey

[audio:https://glidemag.wpengine.com/hiddentrack/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/mikesmakigroove.mp3]

Trey’s playing throughout this ‘Paug is incredibly focused, but he turns it up to a ridiculous level for his final stab at the solo which starts at the 24:25 minute mark of this track and continues for one of my favorite minutes in Phish history. You want to hear some jaw-dropping Trey? This minute of action is your huckleberry. If you listen to nothing else from this show don’t miss out on the Mike’s > Hydrogen > Week > Makisupa > Paug sequence which you can stream above.

This show is available for download through the Phish Spreadsheet. Back in the mid ’90s, I had a cassette-sourced soundboard of the second set that never seemed to have made it over to the digital realm. Be sure to download and listen to this show. 1. The Antelope from this show is immense and throbbing, about to burst at the slightest touch….no wait, that’s me while I listen to it…..well except for the immense part.

  2. Thank you for delivering, as always, B.

I think ’93 doesn’t get nearly enough props anymore, especially that was not always the case. I understand that we all got caught up with the fuck, fuck and all, but now that its all so far back there, upon listening I really like the energy of this era in a way I didn’t appreciate then.

I’m excited to give this one a listen. Always love to discover a new gem!

  3. I’ve not listened to this in quite some time.

    ohh..

    ahhh.

    ummmmm

it’s like an aural shiatsu massage.

  4. Thanks! I’m pumped to listen to this later tonight. I definitely got turned onto ’93 Phish after listening to Miner’s “August ’93” compilation a few weeks ago!

  5. Does anyone know of a complete source? The only source listed on the Etree Database is missing the encore. Would love to hear the only My Friend encore ever!

  6. Awesome. All that’s missing now are

    a) a soundboard to 7/6/94 Montreal show (best Reba ever?), and
    b) a Phish return to Montreal, because 7/6/94 was the last time they were here.
