Hors d’Oeuvres: Contra Gal Update

Following up on a story we told you about last week, Ezra Koening of Vampire Weekend has addressed the lawsuit filed against his band by Contra cover girl Kirsten Kennis. Koening tells the NME that the group doesn’t have much experience in getting sued and that they are treading lightly but that “there’s so many things we could say about it.” Experienced or not, Ezra sure knows how to “no comment” with the best of ’em.

The band’s label, XL Recordings, issued a statement about the suit…

“As is standard practice, Vampire Weekend and XL Recordings licensed the rights to use the photo on the cover of ‘Contra’ pursuant to a license agreement that contains representations and warranties authorizing this use of the photo. Now that a lawsuit has been filed, we look forward to having the matter resolved in court. We will be filing our response after we have had an opportunity to review the allegations. Consistent with our practice, we will not be commenting further about the pending litigation at this time.”

Kirsten’s attorney, Alan Neigher, spoke with EW about how the former model found out her image had been used by Vampire Weekend.

Finally, the Billy Martin-directed “anti-instructional” video Life On Drums will be released on DVD via Vongole Films on October 8. Martin explains…

“Life on Drums is about the art of drumming and percussion, and my concepts, methods, and philosophy of what is important. I discuss the steps that I generally go through in a lesson, but rather than speaking at a camera into nothing, I’m speaking with my first drum teacher Allen Herman.” [via LOD Press Release]

The documentary features footage of Martin performing with a horn section and by himself, discussing drumming with Herman and a group of the MMW drummer’s students tackling one of his composed percussion pieces.
