It’s not much, but fans of Rage Against the Machine have a little something to look forward to next month. Earlier today, it was announced that a live DVD of the band’s 2010 performance at London’s Finsbury Park will be released on September 11.
The concert in question was a bit of a thank you for fans who, back in 2009, helped propel their 1992 song “Killing in the Name” to the top of the UK Christmas charts. It may sound weird to American fans, but over in the UK, the top Christmas single is a coveted spot for artists, and every year sees an intense battle for the position. That year saw British DJ Jon Morter and his wife organize a campaign of protest against the pre-fab popstars and reality show contestants who usually take the spot; the husband and wife team led a grassroots effort to propel the song—known best for its explosive, minute long chant of “fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me”—back to the charts.
Despite being broken up for a decade at that point, the band supported the efforts of the Morters and donated all the proceeds they received from singles sales to charity. The band promised a one-off reunion show in London should they win and six months later they delivered.
Live at Finsbury Park is showcased in glorious high definition, and will feature both a behind the scenes featurette and a new interview with the band conducted by Jon and Tracy Morter. While Rage is still high on our list of bands we’d like to see reunited, chances of that actually happening are pretty slim. In the meantime, we’ll take what we can from this group.
