UTOPiAfest, the camping, family-friendly, capped festival unlike any other, returns for it’s 9th year on September 22nd – 24th, 2017 with a stellar lineup echoing all the great genres and communities that come together in Utopia, Texas. Bittersweet news as well, this will be the final year for the festival at The Four Sisters Ranch as it will relocate for it’s 10th edition in 2018. Meanwhile, we will enjoy the festivities at the ranch one last time and reminisce on all the good times the family and festival team have shown us.
Now, for more of the juicy lineup details. This year features legendary pianist and songwriter, Dr. John for fans of his voodoo rhythm & blues. Lettuce brings the heady grooves and funky beats for the jam crowd, while Antibalas will bring a fusion of the world’s dance music to us. Longtime Utopians, the Wheeler Brothers return from the dead to rock once again and bid farewell to the ranch. Canada is very well represented this year with psychedelic folk elaborators Les Hay Babies, harp-laden folk bearers The Barr Brothers and “the one band you should see this year” Baskery (booked on recommendation from our own Shakey Graves, himself). Recent Texas migrant, Matthew Logan Vasquez (of Delta Spirit) brings his raucous rock and reckless energy to the UTOPiAfest stage. Expect some solid jazz-punk fusion vibes from Mike Dillon, don’t miss a stellar soulful set from Greyhounds and wait on the edge of your seat for your heart to melt hearing The Deer. Be sure to watch Elephant Revival return to folk up the Cypress Stage.
Other local Texas artists being represented include electronic funk purveyors, CAPYAC, sultry singer of Suzanna Choffel and post-genre pop prophet, Mobley. Fresh off rocking the festival lineup reveal party at Do512 Lounge, The Halfways make their UTOPiAfest debut, along with first year Utopians – Jinx McGee, Shawan, Voodoo Boogaloo and Cowboy Irie (festival founder, Travis Sutherland’s own 90’s country reggae cover band). Some of our favorite returning artists including Shane Cooley and the Midnight Girls, Sid Fly, Spivey, and the San Antonio Pipe and Drums.
All of this in the beautiful Texas hill country, camping freely under the stars, at a family-friendly concert with a capped audience, listening comfortably with no music overlap on two stages, bringing your own drinks and avoiding inflated festival prices, not to mention yoga, discgolf, hiking, biking and the late-night silent discos.
Sounds like utopia doesn’t it? …. actually, it’s just UTOPiAfest.
