The nominations for this year’s Academy Awards were released this morning and they’re, well, about what was expected.
Though, as usual, the nominations list was filled with snubs—no Good Time, no Tom Hanks, no Patty Jenkins—this year’s lineup was, overall, a fairly solid representation of all that was great about film last year. Leading the pack this year is Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, with 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Screenplay.
Normally that kind of love from the Academy is a good indicator that a film is headed towards the top honors, but this year the Best Picture race is truly anyone’s game. Of the nine films nominated for Best Picture, not one stands out as either a clear favorite or clear outsider. Each film has gotten its share of love from critic societies and guilds, and even the ones that didn’t have that certain something that makes for Academy favorites.
Get Out, Lady Bird, and The Shape of Water all vied for top honors at many of the lesser awards this season, and any of them would certainly deserve the win at this year’s Oscars. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is the closest we’ve got to a dark horse candidate in 2018, but even that has got some serious legs going into the ceremony, after winning Best Picture (Drama) at the Golden Globes and taking home Best Ensemble at the SAG Awards.
While there were no real surprises in the lineup, there were some signs that the Academy has taken some of the criticism they’ve received in recent years to heart. Jordan Peele has become only the fifth African-American director to be nominated for Best Director, and joins Greta Gerwig and del Toro in what is the most diverse selection of nominees for the category in years. Also of note, Rachel Morrison has become the first female cinematographer to be nominated for an Oscar for her work on Mudbound.
The 90th Annual Academy Awards are set to air March 4 on ABC. Jimmy Kimmel returns to host for the second year in a row. For the full list of nominees, see below.
