VIDEO PREMIERE: Bird Streets Channel Godard Through Triumphant Power Pop Tune “Direction”

In need of a creative rebirth after many years in the New York music scene, John Brodeur reached out to his friend, producer and multi-instrumentalist Jason Falkner, to suggest they record together. The album yielded by this pairing is both fresh and familiar – a dynamic collection of introspective indie-rock and power-pop that draws liberally on the music of decades past without being bluntly nostalgic, with Brodeur’s voice like an old friend you’re meeting for the first time. The Falkner-produced debut, simply titled Bird Streets, will be released worldwide August 10 by Omnivore Recordings.

Today Glide is excited to premiere the new music video for the song “Direction”. Shot in black and white, the video is a tribute to the famed French New Wave director Jean-Luc Godard. In cinema verite style, the camera follows Brodeur around on his leisurely ramblings as a beautifully crafted power pop soundtrack plays in the background. Occasionally we get flourishes of guitar playing that help bring to mind 90s alt rockers like Weezer and Semisonic.

In his own words, Brodeur has this to say about the song and video:

“‘Direction’ was the first song Jason and I recorded together, back in 2014. The video was directed and edited by David Doobinin, who’s recently worked with ‪Juliana Hatfield and John Doe. Dave wanted to do something in the style of Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless, so we brooded and fake chain-smoked across three different boroughs, mimicking shots and existential crises from the film. The Jean Seberg role is played by actress Ana Tinsky. Her energy really brought our scenes to life. We styled her to be selling the French daily Le Monde as a playful inversion to the movie’s Paris setting, with Brooklyn’s Grand Army Plaza playing doppelgänger to the Arc de Triomphe.”
