Boston Calling Day 1: Twenty One Pilots, Greta Van Fleet, Christine and the Queens Provide Flair & Dramatics (FESTIVAL RECAP/PHOTOS)

Twenty One Pilots

Celebrating its tenth installment as Boston’s leading music festival, Boston Calling invited several alumni back to perform along with new faces and names at Harvard’s Athletic Complex in Allston, MA.

Headlining the first night on May 24th, Twenty One Pilots brought the drama with fire, flair, and fun for one an all. Greta Van Fleet’s performance was highly anticipated, and they delivered a solid set of a quasi-vintage rock and roll tunes that did not disappoint. Christine and the Queens camped it up with clever choreography and pomp that added an artistic facet to the day’s bill. Tank and the Bangas brought the funk and an orgy or visual ecstasy to the sea of spectators in front of their stage. Lord Huron took full advantage of his time on stage and delivered a genuine and enthusiastic set. SNL alumn, Fred Armisen, joined a group of local and national comedians in the festival’s arena. Armisen drew plenty of laughter from his fans while playing guitar, drums and cracking jokes as the comedy headliner. Pales Waves connected with the Indie-minded crowd, with their emotional and hypnotic set. Turnstile grinded their way through an abrasive set of hard, punk rock that filled a void within the more pop rock-fueled bill. Adia Victoria danced and sang her way through a blues, jazz and soul-infused set that was more than impressive. Chvrches painted the stage with a vivid and eclectic set of artsy-pop rock that was a feast for both the eyes and the ears. The festival continues on Saturday and Sunday and features additional alumni and newcomers alike.
