Boston Calling Day 2: Tame Impala, Shame, Pile Pack The Punches (FESTIVAL RECAP/PHOTOS)

Tame Impala

Day two, of the Boston Calling Festival on Saturday May 25th, packed a harder punch with a more eclectic mix of artists. Tame Impala headlined the night and carried on their tradition of performing their mellow music that was doused with a psychedelic twist. Anderson .Paak brought his party to the stage with his colorful and engaging set of funk and rap. King Princess apparently enjoyed herself on stage as much as her fans did. Denzel Curry torched the stage with his frenetic energy and vocal bombast. Superorganism simply brought the weird to Boston. It was as perplexing as it was hot in the mid-day sun. White Reaper certainly had enough energy to go around with their pop rock, frat party performance. Pile brought some much-needed rock to the bill as did Princess Nokia with her blistering set of nasty rhymes. Betty Who was quite impressive with her dynamic vocals, choreographed routine and blue hair. She won over the crowd during her set. The Boston Ballet was featured multiple times during the day and with the help of a live band playing reimagined versions of Beatles tunes, the dancers moved through their routine with ear-to-ear smiles. Hozier added a quality set of his hits as the sun started to go down and his fans joined in by singing along to every word. But, the day truly belonged to London’s Shame. They not only sounded amazing, but their punk-fueled, zero-F’s giving, high-octane-set was outstanding. Singer Charlie Steen engaged with the audience from the moment his tattered shit-kickers hit the stage. They should be noted as a band to keep an eye on. In a market, saturated with manufactured-pop, Shame has the schmaltz to turn things around.
