Starcrawler Led By Arrow de Wilde Slithers And Charms At Boston’s Royale (SHOW REVIEW/PHOTOS)

Out on the streets in Boston on May 2t8th, it was a cold, windy, rainy and rather awful night. However, just inside the Royale, Los Angeles’ Starcrawler took to the stage and turned on the heat. With a devilish and furious set, that left the audience’s jaws dropped and their eyes wide-open in awe, this young band handled their opening slot, for the Distillers, like seasoned pros.

Austin Smith (drums) was the first emerge from the shadows and descend from the stairwell to settle in behind his drum kit. Tim Franco (bass) and Henri Cash (guitar) followed to their respective marks. Arrow de Wilde (vox) then slunk onto the stage, literally slithering her way to center stage. From the opening notes, Starcrawler tore through their set with gusto and determination to not only entertain their fans aurally but visually as well. Smith and Franco, never wavered and kept the backbeat solid throughout – allowing Cash and de Wilde to soak up the spotlight.

Intentional or not, de Wilde’s appearance and antics that included spitting blood, spitting water and wrapping her mic lead around her neck – channeled Alice Cooper from the early 70’s. The audience was mesmerized and loved every minute of it as the band ground through most of the material from their debut album and then some. Highlights in the set included, “Ants”, “I Love LA”, “Pussy Tower”, “She Gets Around” and the crushing “Chicken Woman”. It was not a performance to miss, especially with de Wilde giving everything she had for the sake of her and the band’s art. As if contorting her body, squatting, bouncing and writhing all over the stage wasn’t enough, de Wilde climbed into the crowd at the end the finale and allowed herself to be passed around like a crucified rag doll before returning to the stage, exhausted, with only the energy to slither back off the stage exactly the same way she entered. The performance was a memorable one, to say the least.
