Developing from the surf-pop love songs off of their debut, Anything’s Better Than Falling, San Francisco band Bear Call are taking a different direction with their upcoming LP Fancy Acid (out September 9th via Resurrection Records). The album incorporates deep synth textures and dynamic song structure, encompassing the band’s growth and new lineup. After returning from an ambitious West Coast tour and with a refreshed sense of direction, core band members Aaron Mortemore and Skyler Warren settled into their San Francisco home studio and began to approach inspiration and production from new angles. Hibernation is no overstatement as the pair holed up and furiously demoed, wrote, compiled, sampled, and pulled together a distinct and developed point of view.
Today Glide is excited to premiere the the single and video “Harsh”, which is undeniably Bear Call’s furthest venture away from the sound off of their debut. The album has a delightfully simple beat and groove, reflecting the band’s experimentation with dissecting and restructuring the drum tracks as they utilized both drum machine sequences and recorded kit. Bringing to mind the vocals of Modest Mouse and the dreamy slacker rock of Mac Demarco, the song is a slow-moving meditation that is ideally reflected in the weird washed out footage of fruit oozing paint for a sound that is very un-harsh.
