Vinyl Lives: Funk Rockers Zooluxx Share Their Favorite LA Record Stores

In Vinyl Lives we spotlight and profile record stores around the country who offer music lovers an experience that goes beyond an iTunes purchase or a Spotify playlist. For this month’s installment of Vinyl Lives we are doing something a little different by turning over the column to LA band Zooluxx, a sludgy funk outfit that has been quickly gaining fans around the country. In this special edition, the band talks about their favorite record shops in the LA area. Enjoy!

Music appreciation is a big part of our band, we all collect mad records. Bertie & Ned are actual vinyl DJ’s, rockin’ LA dance parties for over a decade now. It’s cool to see so many rad record shops pop up in Los Angeles, lots of interesting spots with great finds, here’s a couple of our favorites and why we dig ‘em.

1. Sick City Records, Echo Park

We love Sick City! They been supporting the underground LA music scene for years. Always got a good selection of local bands’ records on deck, and they even released 45’s by some of our homies bands. They specialize in that nasty rock & roll, punk & funk, classics & rarities. From their original location in Silverlake to their current spot in Echo Park, these cats do it right. Good atmosphere, it’s always a cool vibe. Their in-store live shows are a lot of fun too, and if you need a fresh hair-do then holler at yer boy Frankie in the back! IG: @sickcityrecords

2. Delicious Vinyl, Hollywood

OG’s in the hip-hop game, legends of Los Angeles, Delicious Vinyl has been releasing classic records since the early 90’s. Their physical location is like a museum of underground hip-hop culture, and the funk, soul, jazz, and r&b that inspire it. The selection is minimal but fire, and it’s a pizza shop too, so you can grab a slice and a brew. They have cool live music & DJ happenings in the shop every night, and once a year they throw a really dope free concert called the West Adams Block Party in the street at their West Adams location. We really dig how Rick Ross and the homies bring the community together. Nuthin’ but good vibes! IG: @deliciousvinyl

3. Random Thrift Stores, Los Angeles

It’s slim pickin’s these days, but growing up in LA, back before there was a record shop on every corner, we spent a lot of time scouring the various thrift stores all over town, diggin’ thru crates tryin’ to come up! Found so many gems in the most unlikely places. We still love checking out the random selections, just for shits & giggles.
