VIDEO PREMIERE: The Joeys Unleash Swinging Rockabilly Sounds on “Bad intentions”

In a time and space where rock music is settling for a more subtle and cerebral future, The Joeys are reminding lifelong listeners about its rich heritage, creating a full throttle live rock & roll throw back sound with a modern flare that few young bands are able to achieve.

Originating from Phoenix, AZ, The Joeys display a mastery of both traditional and modern rock styles with their shape-shifting sonic framework, alternating from punk rock to roots, rockabilly and blues. Comprised of Dean Cheney (Guitar/Vocals), Luci Cormany (Bass/Vocals) and Hayden Lamm (Drums), their sound is enmeshed in a world of variety, their strength lies in their diverse production styles, and with each release there exists an aura of innovativeness.

Since bursting onto the scene in 2019 with the gripping “Phantom Bride of 13 Curves”, they have been able to demonstrate their deep appreciation and understanding of rock history with each release by lacing cinematic story-telling with a thrilling blend of bold studio captured live energy.

In 2020 they released their debut EP Punks From Outer Space, showcasing growth in terms of their storytelling and production styles. There’s a lot of frenzy and ecstasy sprinkled all over the EP with even more live energy prowess and more urgent songwriting; Dean Cheney’s vocals draw the listener in from the start of each track with the band pushing their chemistry to new heights and solidifying The Joeys’ trademark sound. The record is filled with truly electrifying tunes.

An early career-affirming moment for The Joeys was in late 2019 when they won Alice Cooper’s Proof is in the Pudding competition. As a result, the band played an opening slot to a sold out Celebrity Theater during Cooper’s Christmas Show. Along with playing several other festivals (including; 2020 AZ Rockabilly Bash, 2019 Lake Havasu Rockabilly Reunion, 2018 Mesa Music Festival, 2018 Phoenix Comic Fest) The Joeys’ music has also been featured on the nationally syndicated Rockabilly & Blues Radio Hour.

Today Glide is excited to premiere the band’s video for the new song “Bad Intentions,” an early Joey’s song that evolved and matured as the band played it live and gained experience in the recording studio. Combining rockabilly swing, surf guitar flourishes, big drum fills, and a mysterious, funky bass line, the song is a blistering exercise in how to properly craft rock and roll. Lyrically, the song tells the story of a modern femme fatale with revenge on her mind, and it’s easy to picture this song as the soundtrack for a stylized shootout scene.

Watch the video for the tune below and read our chat with the band…

The “Bad Intentions” recording session was fairly live without a lot of overdubs or extra production, tell us what it was like to record the song in that way and what the circumstances surrounding that session were.

I think the whole process actually came pretty naturally to us as it’s what we are used to doing. We were all able to play off of each other and add in cool little things to our playing that I don’t think would have happened if not for that live format.

Is your music influenced by the fact that you’re in your teens, or do you try to not bring that to the forefront?

Our songs and the way we play them have a youthful energy to them, and the fact that we are pretty young isn’t really something we try to hide. However, I would say that we enjoy being known for our music and live shows instead of our age.

“Never underestimate a woman’s jealous rage”, tell us more about the character you’re writing about on “Bad Intentions”.

The character is based on Carrie Fisher’s character in the Blues Brothers. She’s just a bad ass, menacing woman driven by revenge and pure rage.

What draws you to the more classic, swing elements of rock n’ roll’s early years that is especially apparent on this track? Especially since you’re such young musicians; do you favor something more classic, as opposed to making strictly modern music?

Even when I was growing up, I’ve always had a huge love for early rock n roll, and swing jazz goes hand in hand with that stuff. So for this song, we definitely wanted to emulate that style, while having elements from our overall sound as a band present.

You are a pretty young band in the grand scheme of this, especially with the lap year covid created. What can we expect from The Joeys for the rest of 2021 and beyond?

As for right now, we are excited to get back to playing shows in our local scene and hopefully recording some new music soon. Down the road, we’d love to tour with some other cool bands.
