Chris Spino, the creative force behind LA indie/folk-rock project Coma Girls, tackles the uncertainties that abound in a new relationship with the latest shoegazey folk-rock single “Knife”. Spino’s endearing, conversational singing is juxtaposed beautifully by huge, fuzzed out guitars, jangly spaced out riffs, and simple driving drums laying the back beat on thick. Look for the same, maximalist sound on the upcoming album No Umbrella For Star Flower out later this year.
“Knife” started off like most of my songs do where I’m just playing acoustic guitar in my room and piecing together lines of lyrics with sequences of chords. The melody is a constant repeating part that elevates and deescalates at different points in the song surrounding the vocals. The lyrics are loosely about meeting somebody and having a kind of collision of spirit, where you’re unsure what the future holds or if you’re able to create some kind of partnership together that is more than just a lustful physical attraction. Whether or not you can see yourself with that person or if you are going to be able to trust them in your distant future. To put it in layman’s terms the difference between hooking up with somebody new or falling in love,” says Spino.
