LISTEN: Sam Wright Tangles Lo-Fi Guitar Riffs With Sunshiney Pop On “Rare Bird”

Sam Wright is a Brooklyn-based artist that makes music at the intersection of lo-fi pop and surf-rock. His newest EP, Seasons was written over the course of 2020 and 2021 when he spent time away from New York City in a remote cabin in upstate New York.

After a turbulent and seemingly disjointed take-off, Wright’s new single “Rare Bird” settles into an infectious homespun groove full of catchy choruses and lo-fi guitar riffs. An ode to a lover of almost mythically awe-inspiring gravitas set to endearingly scruffy garage funk makes for an unassuming earworm here in time for summer’s twilight.

The third track on the EP, “Rare Bird”, is about a lover who confidently and beautifully marches to their own drum. With lines like “She’s an ancient wonder in a dull, dispensable world. She struts upon the altar to the church of other girls. She’s dessert for dinner, golden skies ablaze. Galaxies colliding, with every move she makes” Sam attempts to blend sensory cues and metaphors to illuminate the illusive, mystical aura that surrounds them.
