LISTEN: Passion Fruit Boys Churn Out Prine-ish “Looking For A Friend” With Coy Charm

The Passion Fruit Boys’, “Looking For A Friend”, is DIY Americana at its honest, unfettered best. Self-produced and recorded in their clubhouse living room, the song’s wide-eyed saunter combined with the sincere and humble storytelling make for an altogether unpretentious listen that shares a lot of the qualities people look for from their favorite John Prine song. Their debut, self-titled album Passion Fruit Boys is out October 7 via Telefono.

“At its heart, “Looking for a Friend” is honky tonk-infused Neil Young/Byrds ripoff. It’s a wannabe, but in the most endearing way. While we could only aspire to be as polished as some of those fine players, the charm in this song exists in the beautiful imperfections of which so carefully remain, much like the slightly out-of-tune piano that plays us out,” admits the duo.
