LISTEN: Brady Only Brings Elliott Smith Flavored Pop Groove On “Taking The Hint”

“Taking the Hint’, the enigmatic folk-rock single from New York’s Brady Only, shows the creative possibilities that result from strong songwriting finding its way to a great producer. While perfectly capable of standing on its own with just voice and an acoustic guitar, “Taking the Hint” takes on new life in the hands of Andrew Sarlo, who adds a signature sonic touch while keeping the song’s own unique identity intact. Firmly planted in an Elliott Smith groove, the track sneaks in capricious synth fills and surprising melodic turns one would expect from a Malkmus composition, giving a sense of both sincerity and playfulness.

Brady Only’s “Taking the Hint” was recorded in a cabin in the woods of Pennsylvania with his friends Andrew Sarlo (Big Thief, Bon Iver, Nick Hakim) and Matt Bachmann (Mega bog, Hand Habits, iji). The song is a veiled meditation on the Houston Astros 2018 cheating scandal and its relationship to similar complacency and desire in our own lives.
