Continuing the monumental momentum he’s had all year, Omar Apollo took the stage on Jimmy Kimmel Live to perform his viral hit “Evergreen”. The harmony-drenched song has been circulating social media platforms for the past few months, skyrocketing Apollo to new, well-deserved heights. The song comes off of Apollo’s terrific Ivory album which was released back in April of this year, a deluxe version followed in August.
Much like most of his contemporaries, Apollo got his start recording in his bedroom. He began to teach himself guitar as a teenager and started uploading lo-fi ballads to Soundcloud in 2016. These early recordings, including 2017’s “Ugotme”, introduced the world to a sentimental songwriter whose self-recorded croons touched on universal topics such as boring suburban life and loneliness. Since then you can hear Apollo improve not only in his songwriting but his guitar playing gets a facelift with almost every release. 2022’s Ivory is Apollo at his best yet, the soulfulness of his vocals being backed by an array of influences gives the album a refreshing feeling, this is all especially prominent on his now wildly successful single “Evergreen”.
For his performance on Kimmel, Apollo dawned all black and was backed by a full band. The old school lens through which the performance was shot adds a lovely touch to “Evergreen”, which is already an homage to soul singers of the past. The retro performance showed us the beloved song at a new angle with a new arrangement featuring masterfully placed horn sections and angelic harmonies.
