As a twin and daughter of Deaf parents, her upbringing was anything but ordinary. Carrie Biell came out as a teenager, and after connecting with other Queer artists, music became the outlet that found her a home in Seattle’s expansive indie rock scene. At 20 years old, her first solo release in 2001 Symphony of Sirens launched her music career – landing her on some of Seattle’s top stages, and frequent radio play on indie stations like KEXP, KBOO, and KCRW.
As the pandemic prevented artists from performing in venues Carrie found inspiration in the quiet space of quarantine. She wrote and recorded demos at home, which eventually led to the completion of her latest solo full-length We Get Along – Released in Feb. 2022.
On “Ash in the Sky”, Biell brings together a fascinating menagerie of minimalistic layers under a mesmerizing melody that continually unfolds right up to the song’s end. Masterfully blending elements of psychedelia, chamber pop, and Americana, Biell, along with friend, producer, engineer, and multi-instrumentalist Carl Marti Germain create a stunning homage to beauty people can’t take from you as long as you don’t let them.
“This song captures a place at the end of a relationship of reflection. It’s about holding onto what was beautiful instead of what may have been hurtful and overshadowing at the end. Even if we are falling through some hurt or grief at the end of a relationship, this can be ultimately tied to the love that existed. It highlights why it mattered.. This is the “The other side of love” even if it hurts. This track features my friend Carl Martí Germain who produced, recorded and did much of the instrumentation and backup vocals,” says Biell.
