SONG PREMIERE: Caspian Coberly Delivers Hypnotic Off Kilter Pop On “Shadows Open Speech”

On his new LP Texas Sex, Seattle multi-instrumentalist songwriter Caspian Coberly re-contextualizes guitar-heavy rhythm and blues music for the modern listener, through a haze of intense surrealist groove and primal emotion. Woozy swamp-boogie does a sweat-slick slow dance with intergalactic psych-blues, as mystical pop troubadourism meanders through a warm lo-fi fog. Shot like lightning through the record are Coberly’s raw, primal guitar leads – he is a preternaturally gifted player – providing a compelling contrast to his bed-head vocals. A visceral, gripping snapshot of unfiltered inspiration, Texas Sex is a record for the moment when night stretches into the morning.

Coberly’s musical journey started when his natural gift for the guitar caught the attention of a brace of rock legends: Alan White (Plastic Ono Band, Yes), Duff McKagan (Guns ’n’ Roses), Mike McCready (Pearl Jam), and Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains) all encouraged him to pursue his gift. By age twelve, Caspian began to primarily identify with the raw sound of 60s and 70s funk and rock, and those influences echo throughout Texas Sex.

Glide is premiering the enigmatic “Shadows Open Speech,” which echoes with a Mac DeMarco watery vibe where synths melt with vocals to create an eerie yet contagious melody.

“Shadows Open Speech is a haunting track that captures the energy of a surreal, saccharine romance where all isn’t what it seems to be. For the music video, I wanted to conveys this with glowing Casablanca-esque night shots contrasting scenes of a man in tattered and camouflaged clothes walking on a sunbaked post-apocalyptic beach. Like most of the songs on my Texas Sex record, I’ve crafted a strange, evocative world to relax into,” says Coberly.
