Afton Wolfe is a singer-songwriter for the people in the most genuine way possible. With a deep bravado that is reminiscent of Nick Cave sharing a mic with Johnny Cash, there is plenty to rest your ears upon when hearing Wolfe deliver a tune. With introspective lyrics and valiant delivery, Wolfe has always made the song and its color presentation a work of singer-songwriter art.
Wolfe will be releasing Twenty-Three, the follow-up to his critically-acclaimed debut LP, Kings for Sale, (Grandiflora Records) this Friday, February 3rd. The new EP’s title is more than an allusion to its calendar date and the year of the nascent millennium. The number 23 has a revered history steeped in mystical properties.
Wolfe explains, “The number 23 is Magic, and as such, it has been significant in my musical journey, so my delusional apophenia led me to release these 5 (2+3) songs together on 2.3.23 for the purpose of conjuring all the Magic I possibly could from this Music.”
While four of the five tracks on the EP have hit digital services, they’ll be compiled into a physical release for the first time. The lone wolf among the new chapters is the Memphis soul/Motown-inflected “Cry,” which open-heartedly navigates the weight of grief and grieving.
Glide is premiering the video for “The Moon Is Going Down,” where Wolfe brings us on a story-book ride of animation that Wolfe discovered recently. Check out the video and song for the EP release week….
“Anastasia is a gifted artist from Prague who I found a couple of years ago, during the pandemic. I give her one or two sentences about what the song is about, and she crafts these incredibly beautiful animated videos. Being a huge fan of animation, I’ve fallen in love with her creative style and rhythm. This one is so beautiful and subtle, and like a true artist, she leaves space for the viewer to imprint their own perspective into the work, like she left the space between the bodies and hands of the characters,” says Wolfe.
