Two months into 2023 and the releases have been stellar so far. Every new song seems to connect with you at the perfect time, maybe it’s the joyous mystery of a new year or every musician is just reaching a new level of their creativity.  This week was jam-packed with fresh releases across the board capping off with a Friday filled with full albums that stir up butterflies in your stomach. With the release of De La Soul’s discography on streaming, it may be hard to find time for anything else, it’s overwhelming really. It’s a good problem to have nonetheless as we buckle down for a night of brand-new songs.

Check out Glide’s picks for the best new music released this week of Feb 27-March 3:

Webbed Wing – “Sure Could Use A Friend”

Right After I Smoke This…

For their first release of 2023, Philadelphia’s latest indie offering Webbed Wing drops off a three-song EP of emotional rock. Right After I Smoke features the band’s sole 2022 single “I’m Feelin’ Alive”, along with two new compositions. “Sure Could Use A Friend” features a spacious guitar riff for the verses that swells into this almost twangy arrangement that allows the band’s crooning to shine.

Rome Streetz – “Suicide” (Feat. Lukey Cage & Conway the Machine)

Wasn’t Built In A Day

Following up his incredible 2022 LP, Kiss The Ring, New York’s Rome Streetz teams up with Big Ghost Ltd for a quick LP packed with intricate rhyme schemes and dusty loops. “Suicide” is already one of the grimiest moments hip-hop will have this year with Streetz and Conway The Machine dropping off venomous verses over a rolling piano sample that gives the song an otherworldly texture.

Youth Lagoon – “Idaho Alien

Heaven Is A Junkyard

Youth Lagoon returns after not hearing a peep from the Trevor Powers-led project since 2015’s Savage Hills Ballroom. They’re gearing up to release their brand new album, Heaven Is A Junkyard on June 9 via Fat Possum. “Idaho Alien” is our first look into the LP as Powers’ gentle melodies act as a spiritual guide through this spacious and emotional soundscape.

Waveform – “Lonely

Antarctica

The mysterious duo of waveform* is back with an isolating single from their upcoming LP. Antarctica is set to be released on May 12 via Run For Cover Records and will mark the band’s first album in 3 years. “Lonely” is an acoustic ballad that allows the band to poetically display their feelings of melancholy.

Circles Around The Sun – “Third Sunrise Over Gliese 667

Language

The undeniably fun and naturally talented supergroup Circles Around The Sun are inching closer to the release of its new album. The band’s Language LP is set to release on April 28 and their latest single continues to build excitement. “Third Sunrise Over Gliese 667” sees the psychedelic nature of the band’s arrangements take on a whole new meaning as Circles Around The Sun creates a cinematic track that weaves in and out of the conventional.

Portugal. The Man – “Dummy

Chris Black Changed My Life

Portugal. The Man – Dummy [Official Video]

The unsung heroes of indie rock are rising out of the ashes to drop off a brand new album. Portugal. The Man returns with a new LP and single, marking their first album since 2017’s politically charged Woodstock. “Dummy” is a departure from that sound as the band incorporates harmonies and wavy melodies to create a light-hearted song that fills the soul with enough excitement to fuel your entire week.

Arlo Parks – “Impurities”

My Soft Machine

One of the most exciting voices in modern music is prepping for the release of her sophomore LP. Arlo Parks is set to release My Soft Machine on May 26 and her latest offering continues to build the hype around Parks. “Impurities” sees Parks’ gorgeous falsetto glide over a steady drum pattern as she unveils more of her poetic songwriting throughout the track.

Fontaines D.C. – “Cello Song

The Endless Coloured Ways

Fontaines D.C. tackles the timeless songwriting of Nick Drake for this single. “‘Cello Song” has the band reinterpreting Drake’s classic track and giving it a facelift through their high-octane style of playing. The single will be featured on the upcoming The Endless Coloured Ways compilation which will have 30 artists putting their spin on old Drake compositions, set to release on July 7.

Califone – “The Habsburg Jaw

Villagers

The eccentric style of Califone is on full display for their latest single. “The Habsburg Jaw” has the band melting electronic elements with crashing acoustics, combining to create quirky textures that are equal parts fun yet impressive. The song comes from the band’s upcoming album, Villagers, set to release on May 19 via Jealous Butcher Records.

Mach-Hommy & Tha God Fahim – “Olajuwon

Notorious Dump Legends, Vol. 2

The greatest rapper in the world is back with his equally impressive frequent collaborator to remind us why no one can come close to their chemistry. “Olajuwon ” pays homage to the storied NBA legend as Mach-Hommy and Tha God Fahim navigate a murky instrumental provided by Sadhu Gold. The duo’s ever-diverse choice of flows melts over their carefully selected words, adding a coating of aggression to their intellect. The song comes from Hommy and Fahim’s latest collaborative album, Notorious Dump Legends, Vol. 2, out today.
