“I make everything in winter,
I make everything at once.
Some people wanna be the killer,
Some people wanna be the gun.”
This is the opening stanza from Max Garcia Conover’s new single “everything in winter.” There’s no doubt by the intimate nature of the recording and vocal forward mix that Max wants his words to not only be heard but processed and pondered. There’s a poetic nature to the storytelling that can be lost by a lot of songwriters; there are elements of his own story and trails that lead to the ideas and themes, but also a lot has left the imagination of the listener to interpret the way they choose to. Another stanza that stood out was: “I like everything about you/I’m so glad you’re around/I don’t believe in hallelujah/but I like the way it sounds.”
This gentle emotive but not aggrandizing songwriting style spanning generations through artists like Elliot Smith, Connor Oberst, or Gregory Alan Isakov isn’t easy to pull of, but Max manages to do it with grace on this track.
