Craft Recordings Celebrate 20th Anniversary of Filter’s Powerful ‘The Amalgamut’ with Vinyl Reissue (ALBUM REVIEW)

In the 90s, Filter seemed like an unstoppable force. After leaving Nine Inch Nails as a touring guitarist, Filter lead man Richard Patrick formed Filter with guitarist Brian Liesegang. Releasing two platinum selling albums, Short Bus and Title of Record propelled skyward on the backs of the singles “Hey Man Nice Shot” and “Take My Picture,” respectively. The Amalgamut is the third studio album by Filter, released in 2002. Though not quite the behemoth as its predecessors, Patrick and company presents a powerful and diverse collection of songs that showcase their musicianship and artistic vision. For its twentieth anniversary, Craft Recordings is releasing The Amalgamut on vinyl for the first time

The album opens with “You Walk Away,” a track that sets the tone for the rest of the record with its heavy riffs, driving drums, and Patrick’s dynamic vocals. The second track, “American Cliché,” features a catchy chorus and a rebellious spirit that is further emphasized in the following song, “Where Do We Go From Here.” One of the standout tracks of the album is “The Missing,” which features haunting guitar riffs and a melancholic atmosphere that blends perfectly with Patrick’s emotive singing. The song is a tribute to Patrick’s late friend, musician Jeff Buckley, and it conveys a sense of loss and nostalgia that resonates with the listener. Other notable tracks on the album include “The Only Way (Is the Wrong Way),” which features a pulsating rhythm and a punk-inspired attitude, and “My Long Walk to Jail,” a slower-paced song that showcases Patrick’s ability to convey vulnerability and introspection through his lyrics and vocal performance.

Overall, The Amalgamut is a powerful and engaging album that displays Filter’s range and versatility as a band. The album combines elements of alternative rock, metal, and industrial music to create a unique sound that is both aggressive and introspective. The production quality is excellent, with each instrument and vocal track sounding crisp and well-balanced. The lyrics are also a highlight of the album, with Patrick addressing themes of personal struggle and addiction. The songs hit a bit harder since just as the tour started Patrick checked into rehab and the band went on a hiatus. The Amalgamut is a must-listen for fans of alternative rock and metal. The album stands as a testament to Filter’s talent and creative vision and remains a relevant and impactful work almost two decades after its release.
