Sara Trunzo is a Maine-based independent singer-songwriter, community organizer (co-founder of Veggies For All and Waldo County Bounty), and creator and host of “Country & Northeastern” on WERU Community Radio.
With a powerful voice evoking deep emotional feelings, Trunzo brings us her vulnerable and spirited track “Taking My Power Back”. Built on rich electric guitar tone and creative percussive elements, Trunzo speaks to something all too real, the rising and unaffordable costs of public utility, as she uses Americana moods and rock n roll energy to express a heartfelt sentiment of enough is enough. “Taking My Power Back” is a raw and exposed Americana beauty.
“My hope is that this song effectively captures the struggles that Mainers are having with the cost, transparency, customer service, and climate impacts of an exploitive corporate electrical utility— one that takes $187M in profits out of Maine annually. It is based, in part, on direct citizen testimony during heard during the 2021 legislative session. Despite seeing the kernel of a song in this issue for over a year, I was only able to pull it together about 4 weeks ago— recording my pieces in Maine and working remotely with a Nashville producer and players. We hurried to get it done before a key election on November 7th (which we actually lost, but organizing is ongoing), because country songs have been and continue to be an effective, accessible organizing tool around issues impacting rural people.”
