LISTEN: Applied Communications Crafts Curiously Complex Song Dynamics With “Tomboy Femme”

Interpolation is made to seem easy on Applied Communications’ new single “Tomboy Femme”. The ever-growing creative persona of Max Wood crafts an infectiously complex tune with touches of whimsy that are interrupted by the harsh realities of the electronic blips and neck-breaking drum patterns. The off-kilter vocals feel right at home over the unpredictable bounce of the instrumental. They flipped a classic melody into something entirely new, which was not an easy task despite “Tomboy Femme” making it feel natural. Applied Communications created an infectious lo-fi single bursting with brightly colored tones that evoke a genuine warmth while implementing their own twist on an iconic sample.

“I made a version of this song in 1999, when I was 12, as a birthday gift for my mom. I’ve gone back and tinkered with it over the years and finally got it to a place that felt right – 25 years later!” explains Wood on their new single. “All the samples and callbacks in the track are pieces of music that have meant something to me on my super long journey of sorting out my identity.”
