LISTEN: Tendavillage Molds Glistening Neo Soul On Jammin’ “Time Alone”

Tendavillage is a Canadian-based musical group that blends soul, rnb, funk, and jazz while featuring soulful vocals, hard grooving beats a la Dilla, and lyrics with a sense of humour. As the lead songwriter and producer, Kate Melvina cites influences such as Stevie Wonder, Prince, D’Angelo, Mononeon, and Moonchild, along with jazz greats George Duke and Esperanza Spalding. Lyrical inspiration comes from video games, heartbreak, and occasionally her favorite Simpson character, Ralph Wiggum. Over the past 5 years, Kate has established herself as a regular performer in Western Canada, featuring at the Fairmont Palliser and the Fairmont Banff Springs. Tendavillage creates mesmerizing neo-soul with confessional lyrics, and “Time Alone” is a prime example of what sets them apart from their soulful contemporaries. The song provides a gentle hypnosis to get lost in. It is a psychedelic sonic journey lined with whimsical tones and stunning harmonies. The band captured the serenity of a warm day at a like and spun it into an anthem with unlimited replay value. The danceable grooves are accented by the reliability of the songwriting. We have all reached a point where we just need some time to ourselves. Tendavillage flipped that heavy emotion into a lighthearted single that glistens in the dark and sounds like the moment you close your eyes in search of peace.

“This song morphed from a demo about instant coffee into a song about needing time to oneself. I have a tendency to go off on my own a lot just because I find too much social stimulation draining, though I do really enjoy spending time with the people I love,” explains the band. “So many of my favorite activities involve being alone, whether it’s creating or spending time in nature. Some of the lyrics talk about the need for certain people to be constantly plugged into each other’s lives, and while that’s okay from some, I definitely need my space. And it’s not personal! One lyric is, ‘I might even really like you. It’s just a case of needing space.’ I’m sure others can relate as well. And if not, hopefully, they can just enjoy the vibes.”’
