LISTEN: Snakey Dublay Creates A Distorted Post-Punk Wonderland On “Angry Eye”

Snakey Dublay is the recording project of multi-instrumentalist Colin Dawson (member of Haunted Horses, Stickers, Daisyheroin). It creates a unique brand of frenetic and melodic post-punk/new wave / indie rock sounds while still incorporating gothic sounds featured in other projects. Currently, the project is working to finish its first full-length batch of songs and get the live band ready to shred.

The breezy guitar chords of “Angry Eye” are cut in half by the eerie vocals and industrial-style drum patterns. The latest single from Dawson’s Snakey Dublay is pieced together like a collage, with elements from different eras clashing together for a picturesque final product. One piece of the puzzle may represent the lo-fi rock tones of the vocals, while another hints at tropes from the modern post-punk scene. The final portrait is fuzzy psychedelia with Dawson’s poetic approach to his frontman duties at its core. The warping vocals blend into the busy arrangement without falling victim to it, giving the song some otherworldly textures. “Angry Eye” is an explosive single from a young band navigating their influences to land on a uniquely chaotic sound with plenty of room to explore and grow.

“‘Angry Eye’ was written among a batch of songs I wrote in the fall. I find fall a beautiful season and wanted to [make] music to match with rustling orange and red trees,” explains Dawson. “This song, in particular, was about a windy day in which I get a leaf in my eye, which remained very red and irritated all day.”
