LISTEN: Max Bien Kahn Brings Sonic Melancholy With Spacious “Flowers”

Max Bien Kahn is back with a new single, “Flowers”, a time capsule of true cinematic design and feel. The New Orleans-based artist has a tasteful way with spacious delivery of refined tone and delightful melancholy. As his warm vibrato slinks across the sonic landscape, delicate like a gentle whisper in your ear, a conversationist at his best, Bien Kahn, in less than three minutes, finishes a thought and leaves you wanting more.

“The song “Flowers” is about writer’s block and an identity crisis that came from a fear of what was to come as an out-of-work musician during a global pandemic,” says Bien Kahn. I didn’t realize it at the time, but it was the one new song I had that kept me inspired to keep writing. The album was recorded when the world was still very much shut down with four close friends. We were masked up in my living room in Holy Cross, New Orleans, which is snuggled up next to the river. We kept the windows open, made due to the current situation and the instruments on hand. For some songs, like “Saturday Night”, it meant using kitchen utensils for percussion. The album explores loss in its myriad of forms, but there are many moments of love and playfulness, like “Whatever You Want” and “Planet of Love”. ‘Flowers’ is an attempt to stay true to the peaks and valleys of my life during uncertain times. Looking back now, the sum of its parts is greater than its whole.”
