LISTEN: Mathilde Widding’s Sultry Jazz Undertones Melt Modern & Vintage Via “Spells Under Me”

Mathilde Widding is a young Norwegian artist and songwriter influenced and inspired by ’60s soul and contemporary music in genres such as soul and jazz. With her mature and playful vocals, she has made an impression on the music scene around the world. Mathilde invited us into her soulful soundscape with her debut single, “Halfway,” on November 11th, 2022. Since then, she has released the following songs, “Stronger” and “Love” (and everything between), “My Mr. Right,” “Tangled up in blue,” “Goodbyes,” and Spells Me Under.” All the songs showcase Mathilde’s creative and versatile vocals in combination with her and her teams’ new thinking, songwriting, and production efforts.

Widding’s latest single, “Spells Me Under,” is a mesmerizing display of unique melodic phrasing and jazzy undertones. With the help of some groovy drum patterns and lush pianos, the artist puts on a stunning vocal performance with eerie grace. There is something haunting about Widding’s vocals on this single. The gravitas of the vocals fills out the minimal yet infectious arrangement, but how the two elements interact keeps you coming back to “Spell Me Under.” The somber tones of the arrangement create a dark atmosphere that is elevated by Widding’s jaw-dropping vocal range, adding a freeing element to the tight jazz structure. Widding’s “Spells Me Under” positions the vocalist as a dynamic vocalist with a deep understanding of jazz standards as she adds her own unique touches to tropes from the genre’s past.

“For me, the song is a reflecting journey but also an exposure of the vulnerable moment. I wish to take the listeners on a journey where vulnerability, desperation, and sorrow are exposed,” explains Widding. “If you’ve ever been ‘really down,’ you’ll probably recognize the desperation and the lingering pain in this song.”
