Weirdo Wednesday: Captain Beefheart Suffers Through Mojave Summer On “Ice Cream for Crow” 1982

Captain Beefheart knew a thing or two about the dog days of August. In fact, he spent most of his years residing in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. Whether or not all that searing heat directly contributed to his notoriously eccentric nature is anyone’s guess, but whatever the case, it sure seemed to be a source of inspiration in this delightfully off-kilter and entertaining video for “Ice Cream for Crow”.   Indeed, this video and song really capture all the things that made the late great Don Van Vliet such a beloved and celebrated figure in music history. It’s artsy, bizarre, quirky, amusing, eclectic, unique, and captivating. It also happens to be both the first and last music video the good Captain would ever make, as he would abruptly retire from music to focus on his other artistic endeavors as a painter shortly after it was released. Quite a way to go out. R.I.P. Don. Dig it:
