LISTEN: Mother of Earl’s “Venomous Snake” Blends Carefree Pop With Vulnerable Songwriting

Mother of Earl is a Pittsburgh, PA/Los Angeles, CA-based rock & roll band formed in Morgantown, WV, in 2019 and led by founding members Alex Nanni and Ross Weidman and supported by a revolving roster of their many talented friends. While attending West Virginia University, the two quickly became best friends after Alex responded to a “Musicians Wanted” flier posted by Ross, and the two bonded over their love of U2’s Achtung Baby. Alex currently lives in Pittsburgh, PA, and Ross currently lives in Los Angeles, CA.

While separated by time zones and state lines, Mother of Earl sounds like a honed, psychedelic force on “Venomous Snake.” The band’s latest single showcases their natural chemistry, conquering great distances to reach the mountaintop of pop fusion with a jangly outing that is as infectious as it is complex. The bright tones and jovial melodies are quickly juxtaposed by the longing and hurt expressed in the songwriting. The imaginative lyrics alert the listener to be cautious of too good of a situation via captivating imagery and moving metaphors. “Venomous Snake” is pure poetry in motion. The new single has Mother of Earl diving head first into their pop tendencies while spinning the genre’s tropes into otherworldly rock, all while delivering moving poetry that accents warping arrangement in a beautifully grandiose fashion.
