Beloved founding Grateful Dead member/bassist Phil Lesh died today (10/25/40) as reported on his Facebook and Instagram page.
“Phil Lesh, bassist and founding member of The Grateful Dead, passed peacefully this morning. He was surrounded by his family and full of love. Phil brought immense joy to everyone around him and leaves behind a legacy of music and love. We request that you respect the Lesh family’s privacy at this time.”
While Lesh has battled health issues in recent years, he most recently performed on August 18th as part of Phil and Friends. Lesh’s bass playing and tone helped The Grateful Dead achieve such spiritual highs for its devoted fanbase, and his loss and impact on live music will forever be felt.
