Allman Brothers Band @ Beacon – Night One

The Allman Brothers Band kicked off their annual March Madness run last night at the Beacon Theatre in NYC with a guest-less show that featured a bust out, a new cover and a tip of the hat to a longtime member of the band’s crew who recently passed away.

The action started with a drum solo that led into a jam based off of Miles Davis’ Spanish Key from the trumpet player’s seminal Bitches Brew LP. Once the ensemble finished playing around with Spanish Key’s main riff, they went off into an interesting jam space that allowed each member to shine before finishing off with more drums. Our first bust out of the run followed as the group dusted off Sailin’ Across The Devil’s Sea from Where It All Begins for the first time in six years.

Set One: Drums > Spanish Key (Miles Davis) “Jam” > Drums > Sailin’ Across The Devils Sea, Walk On Guilded Splinters, Come And Go Blues, Worried Down With The Blues, Kind Of Bird, Trouble No More, Woman Across The River, One Way Out

Set Two: ***Jaimoe Dedication to Red Dog***, Blind Willie McTell, Midnight Rider, High Cost Of Low Living, Bag End (Derek’s Instrumental), Hoochie Coochie Man, Leave My Blues At Home > JaBuMaOt > Leave My Blues At Home, Revival

Encore: Southbound

An emotional moment came at the beginning of the second set, when founding member Jaimoe strode to the front of the stage to dedicate the Beacon run to Red Dog – the band’s legendary roadie who passed away on February 21. Over the group’s first ten years of Beacon performances, each show was crafted around “greatest hits” such as Whipping Post, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed and Jessica, but the Allmans showed off how far they have come since Dickey Betts left the band in terms of setlist creation by stretching out songs like Leave My Blues at Home and Worried Down With The Blues.

Gregg, Oteil, Jaimoe, Butch, Marc, Derek and Warren return to the Beacon tonight for the second show of the run. For those that can’t make it to NYC, you can watch the action live by purchasing a Moogis subscription.
