Stormy Monday: Summer Groove Mix

It’s a great groove mix this week on Stormy Mondays, kicking off with John Scofield’s A Go Go, the title track of the album that single-handedly initiated the New Groove revolution near the turn of the century, helped in no small part by his band for the album, MMW. It is one of the true classics of the genre, a document that is as fresh and vital today as the day it was recorded. Next is Robert Walter’s Super Heavy Organ with Kickin’ Up Dust, no funkier tune around.

Charles Earland is one of the great acid jazz organ players of the late sixties and seventies, and his Black Talk! features the late, wonderful Melvin Sparks ripping it up on guitar. From the late seventies, Reconstruction offers up a nice version of Soul Roach, and we close out with the band that’s synonymous with the groove, Soulive, with their cover of Stevie Wonder’s Jesus Children of America from the spring of 2000, a band and track that were as important in solidifying the musical movement as Sco and MMW were in igniting it. It’s my favorite mix in a long time, so take the time to give it a shot, and as always, enjoy!
