Video: Levon Helm on SCTV – Sweet Georgia Peach Wine

If you’re unfamiliar with Second City Television, aka SCTV, it was an “ahead of its time” sketch comedy show that launched the careers of John Candy, Rick Moranis, Eugene Levy, Martin Short and a slew of talented comedians. The Canadian program ran from 1976 until 1984, though those of us in the States only saw it come to NBC in 1981. Just like its main competitor, Saturday Night Live, SCTV mixed in musical performances with the sketches.

Former The Band drummer Levon Helm visited SCTV land for an episode that ran on May 15, 1981 as part of the show’s fourth season. Helm performed Sweet Georgia Peach Wine and a cover of Eddie Cochran’s Summertime Blues backed by Earl Cate on lead guitar, Ernie Cate on keyboard, Ron Eoff on bass and Terry Cagle on drums. Ol’ Lee even participated in a skit with Eugene Levy. Check out Helm and the Cate Brothers’ take on Sweet Georgia Peach Wine…
