New Widespread Panic Porch Songs: 01/02/1998

Widespread Panic keeps on putting out Porch Songs archival releases at a fast and furious pace. Today, the band has announced the latest two-track release which was recorded on January 2, 1998 at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. This guest spot-filled show was the final performance of a four-night run at the historic venue that included a New Year’s Eve “history lesson” which was released back in November as part of Widespread Panic’s multi-track archival series.

Aquarium Rescue Unit touring percussionist Count Mbutu sat in on percussion for nearly the whole show, only sitting out a three-song segment that started the second set. A jam filled first set also saw guest appearances from Reverend Jeff Mosier on banjo for Chunk Of Coal and Randall Bramblett on sax for Weight Of The World. The second set contained a wild Airplane jam that segued into a cover of Low Rider featuring Count Mbutu and Chris Yuella along with Sunny on percussion as well as Bramblett on sax. Yet the defining moment of Widespread Panic’s first show of 1998 may be the ridiculous Low Spark > Time Is Free > Low Spark encore that saw Col. Bruce Hampton emerge to sing one of his signature songs as well as guest spots from Mosier, Mbutu and Bramblett.
