A woefully unsung but nonetheless stalwart practitioner of contemporary blues, Matt Schofield tours constantly and records regularly in ample demonstration of his loyalty to the genre. The British guitarist may seem to scour the European continent at the expense of North America sometimes. Still, ultimately, he makes sure he touches all the international bases as he plays intimate venues like the one pictured in this accompanying clip. In doing so, he reveals a wholly unaffected and personal style of singing and playing– clean and bereft of slavish devotion–that deserves far more recognition than it receives. As also captured in his 2009 studio work Heads, Tales & Aces, Schofield’s unassuming musicianship (and that of his accompanists) belies its latent force.
