Blips: Three Under The Radar Bands

Welcome to our latest edition of Blips, where we look at three under-the-radar bands that you need to know about.

Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band

Website / MySpace

If you ever catch yourself in one of those funks where they noodling doesn’t hit the spot, indie rock is too tired, and you just can’t find the cure for what ails ye’, what you need is a dose of Reverend Furry Peyton playing some old time guitar, slide or dobro, “Washboard” Breezy on the washboard, and Jamie Peyton on the drums. Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band does for Delta Blues, what the Dropkick Murphy’s do for Irish Music; they douse it with strong whiskey and light it on fire. The threesome lives up to their ironic moniker by transcending their size in both sound and stage presence. This is a band that is destined for greatness, particularly festival greatness. For summers to come, this band will attract festie stragglers to their stage as the quirky, frenetic sound reels ‘em in like the Banjo Minnow. – Rupert

At The Barbecue: Best Music Of ’08 (So Far)

With the July 4th right around the corner, we thought we’d get the HT gang together again to slap a variety of foodstuffs on the grill and throw back some Six Point Hop Obama’s for another edition of At The Barbecue. This time around we figured we’d find out what has been burning up the iPods of our faithful HT Contributors as we approach the mid-way point of 2008.

Much like Fight Club there were no rules – the albums could be something released this year, something you’ve just discovered or an old classic that’s just been getting a lot of play. So sit back and enjoy, the Best Music Of ’08 (So Far)…

Neddy:

Favorite album of the year has to be, no ifs ands or buts, John Zorn’s the Dreamers. You won’t find a more talented ensemble of musicians playing more soul-pleasing compositions in such amazing fashion anywhere else — I gar-uhn-tee. Your favorite genre — be it piano jazz, reverby surf, dirty funk or Lou Reed pop — is reinvented, dissected, exploded, imploded, impregnated and otherwise made to feel welcome in that cozy spot between the tiny hairs inside your ears and the squishy gray stuff beyond. All that and free stickers! Enjoy!

Uncensored Thursdays: The French Are Still Friggin’ Weird, Plus Playboy – The Video Game

We’ve been fans of Uncensored Interview for some time now, as they managed to nab a veritable who’s who of the indie-rock world to gab for their cameras about whatever is on their minds. So it wasn’t much of a stretch to extend the invite to the sharp-tongued and witty mind behind the UI blog, The Shark, to contribute new bi-weekly feature we’re dubbing Uncensored Thursdays…

You know those people who claim they read Playboy just for the articles? Yeah, well Dimitri FromParis just one-upped them by claiming that the best part about visiting the Playboy Mansion is the decor.

Yeah right, this is about as believable as Will from Senryu claiming that he only watches porn for the bloopers. C’mon Dimitri, admit it, I mean Hef’s a pretty classy guy, so the decor is probably really nice, but don’t tell me you didn’t spend copious amounts of time in the grotto staring at some tig ol’ bitties. You’re in a goddamn den of sin. THE goddamn den of sin, in fact, and you’re studying the artwork, statues and drapery? I think not! READ ON for more…

The Weight: Ruminations On The ‘Roo

The boys from The Weight returned to Bonnaroo once again this year, and Dave filed this report shortly after regaining use of his brain…

Last night, after returning home from another Bonnaroo festival, I was thinking about how to best capture my experience in words. I started by listing some bullet points that I planned to weave into my review. As the list got longer, I realized that it stood on its own. This was my sixth trip to Manchester, so obviously I’ve had some positive experiences there. This year was no exception.

  • When I see Eddie Vedder truly moved by the endless sea of people holding flickering lighters above their heads during Better Man, I know that he gets it. When I hear that Kanye West did not apologize to the crowd for his lateness, or even address it, I know that he does not.
  • Instead of considering Bonnaroo as an escape from reality for three days a year, I should really be viewing the other 362 days as getting in the way of reality.
  • How can the same man be dumb enough to try and sneak in a nitrous tank, yet smart enough to hide it covertly in a covered recycling bin?
  • I will never tire of hearing Tennessee Jed played at Bonnaroo. Thank you Dark Star Orchestra for being the ones to play it this year.

The Weight’s Bonnaroo Must List

Since we aren’t making it down to Manchester this year, we thought who better to turn to than our buddy Ryan from The Weight – who has way more Bonnaroo experience under his belt then the both of us combined – for some thoughts about who is on his Must See List this year…

With this year’s Bonnaroo festival fast approaching, it’s time to gas up the family truckster, set the GPS to Centeroo and get back to the farm. In what has become an annual right of passage, I’ll be off to Manchester, TN for the sixth time out of the seven years the festival has been in existence (only missed ’05!, with DMB, whatever).

While each year brings its highs and lows (and for the majority of festival goers it’s mostly highs due to an extreme lack of security – cough, cough), just being back in Tennessee is a fantastic excuse to get away from normalcy and pretend that you are still a grizzled tourhead, despite your mortgage. No matter what it is that is calling you to 300 acres of grass and dirt 60 miles southeast of Nashville, it’s truly a magical place to celebrate live music.

Sam Bush: A Hidden Track Brain Picking

You might know him as Mr. Telluride, the King of Newgrass, or just the curly haired red-head who never stops a wailing on that mandolin – unless of course to wail on the fiddle or howl at the moon. As we gear up for the heart of festival season and that special little bluegrass jamboree just north of Durango, let’s get down to business and chat with one of the brightest sounds and smiles of every summer.

The Brew

Website / MySpace

When the nominees for the New Groove Award were read at the recent Jammy Awards, Massachusetts’ The Brew got the biggest ovation from the crowd. After listening to their new album, Back To The Woods, I can understand why people are so into their music. The Brew has spent the last five years developing a unique songwriting style that combines flashy changes, beautiful lyrics and hooks you just can’t get out of your head. They also know how to kick out the jams behind Dave Drouin’s soaring guitar leads. 2008 looks to be the year that The Brew breaks into the bigtime. You can check ’em out at moe.down or pretty much any decent sized city in the Northeast over the next few months. Keep your eyes on these guys, they are the real deal. – Scott Bernstein
