Finally, HT faves BuzzUniverse have spent the last few months in the studio, which didn’t leave the group much time for gigs. That changes later this week when BuzzU teams up with The Heavy Pets for a show at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ on Wednesday, the first show on the jam/world-beat act’s Spring Tour. The former Blips act will hit NYC, New Hope, Providence, Portland (ME), Cleveland, Indianapolis, Athens (OH), Kingston (NY) and Philadelphia by the time the tour comes to a close in May.

Announcement: Electric Forest Lineup

The lineup for the first-ever Electric Forest festival has been released and features an eclectic mix of acts. String Cheese Incident will perform three shows over the course of the four-day event, which takes place at the Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury, MI on June 30 – July 3. Event promoters clearly went for the “we’re not like every other summer festival” feel for Electric Forest’s lineup as Dutch DJs Tiësto and Laidback Luke as well as Midwest rockers REO Speedwagon aren’t exactly doing the rounds this season.

Other acts on the electronica-heavy bill include Pretty Lights, Bassnectar, Shpongle presents The Shpongletron Experience and Kaskade. Representing the bluegrass element will be Railraod Earth, Greensky Bluegrass, The Infamous Stringdusters and the Emmitt-Nershi Band. For a taste of funk Lettuce and Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe will be on hand, while JJ Grey & Mofro, Steez and Rubblebucket add a rock flair to the event.

Electric Forest tickets go on sale this Saturday at Noon ET.

Review: Lo, Aaron, Jon & Dan @ Joe’s

Lo Faber and Aaron Maxwell w/ Jon Bevo, Dan Pifer and special guest Jason Crosby @ Joe’s Pub, February 25

Joe’s Pub isn’t exactly like the ramshackle bars and clubs where God Street Wine cut its teeth two decades ago in New York City. Guitarist Lo Faber, who was performing with three of his four GSW band mates at the high-end venue, alluded to the difference after the Borderline opener by mentioning how weird it was to have food served to the tables in front him as he was performing the tune. “They didn’t have food service at the 712 Club,” Faber said before the quartet launched into Thirsty.

Over the course of the hour-plus set, Faber, Aaron Maxwell, Jon Bevo and Dan Pifer offered a mix of God Street classics and rarities in front of a crowd filled with family and friends. For most of the show, Maxwell and Faber performed on acoustic guitars as they have for the handful of shows the duo played over the past few months. What made this show different was the addition of Pifer and Bevo.

While the presence, skill and chemistry that GSW drummer Tom Osander brings to the group can never be replaced, those in attendance weren’t focusing on what was missing. Instead, the Winos lapped up the rare opportunity to see the songs they love in such a plush setting.
