Monday’s Hors d’Oeuvres & Weekend Setlists

All four original members of Los Lobos met, attended and graduated L.A.’s Garfield High School during the early ’70s. They must’ve been saddened when on May 20th a Garfield student committed arson and burned down a good portion of the school, including the auditorium. Los Lobos hasn’t forgotten its roots, and the band will perform at a benefit concert on October 14th in hopes of raising enough money to buy a new auditorium for the students of Garfield. Nice guys.

And while you’re still deciding how much you want to pay for the new Radiohead album, read on after the jump for the weekend’s setlists, including but not limited to Andrew Bird, Arcade Fire, Bela Fleck, The National, Van Halen, Tea Leaf Green, P-Groove, moe. and all your other favorite bands…

Radiohead’s New Album Comes In 10 Days

Radiohead fans and other salivating webgeeks were disappointed last week when a site called radioheadlp7.com — which featured a countdown clock until the band’s supposedly new album — turned out to be a hoax.

But misdirection led to some truth, and tonight we are hearing news of a pending release: Radiohead has just put up a link on radiohead.com to pre-order their new album In Rainbows. The new material will available for download in only 10 days, October 10th. And in a case of the ultimate switcharoo, radioheadlp7.com now redirects you right to the official InRainbows site, where you can pre-order the album. Now that, my friends, is what we call craisins.

Or is this all just another hoax? If it’s real, Radiohead has found an incredibly creative way to bypass leaks and can revolutionize the industry with tonight’s announcement. Those old-fashioned types who want an actual CD will have to wait until December 3rd, when the discboxes will be shipped. We can’t wait to see what Bob Lefsetz has to say about this news. Thanks to Jez for the heads-up.

For Real: Van Halen Actually Takes The Stage

After more than a decade of trying, Van Halen finally took the stage with David Lee Roth last night at Charlotte Bobcats Arena in North Carolina. Van Halen played 26 songs, all of which came from the six albums they recorded before Sammy Hagar came along in 1986, none of which came from men with 1980s teased hairdos.

Reports say 16-year-old Wolfgang Van Halen handled both the bass playing and background vocals extremely well. It’s also nice to hear that David Lee Roth’s vocals are sounding good, and that Eddie Van Halen is still tearing it up. We just hope that Eddie and David Lee can continue to put the music above their petty bickering (at least until they hit the NYC area in early November). Van Halen plays their second show on Saturday night at the Greensboro Coliseum. Read on for the setlist from Charlotte…

Grousing The Aisles: Another Mixed Bag

This week’s edition of GTA features a miscellany of terrific performances. We start off with an outstanding Ryan Adams’ show from last week before moving on to a Meters bootleg that comes straight from George Porter Jr. Prince, a funk all-star in his own right, recently completed a 21-show run in London, and we’ve got his hot after-show from Friday night that includes a terrific cameo by Amy Winehouse. Finally we travel back to 1967 for a look at the beginnings of Traffic. As usual we’ve included a link to MP3 files for all of the torrents we’ve reviewed.

Ryan Adams 09/21/2007 SBD Matrix [FLAC, MP3, STREAM]

Ryan Adams is currently in the middle of a lengthy tour with The Cardinals, and we’ve gotta give Adams some major kudos for allowing tapers to patch in to the soundboard during many gigs on the run (there are soundboards of nearly every recent show on the Live Music Archive). It’s good to see Adams learned something from Phil Lesh about how circulating free soundboards actually drives ticket sales. After scouring some of Adams’ fan sites, we got a recommendation that Friday’s show in Toronto was the best of the batch. If only finding soundboards of the best recent shows from every live band was this easy.

Both the crowd and Adams seem extremely happy to be in each other’s company throughout every song played at this show. I’ve heard so many negative things about Adams’ demenor and stage presence, but this bootleg shows Adams to be engaging in his personality and his musicianship. Many audience members shout requests throughout the night, and Adams’ playfully jokes “You all sound like cavemen grunting from up here.” Musically, the highlights were numerous, including the band’s incredible harmonies on Peaceful Valley and its jamming on Magnolia Mountain.
