Genesis Turns It On…Again

Genesis kicked off their Turn It On Again reunion tour under the midnight sun in Helsinki last night. While Petey Gabriel is off preparing a tour of his own that starts on Thursday, his former bandmates played a varied setlist featuring material ranging from 1973’s Selling England By The Pound to 1992’s We Can’t Dance on a spectacular stage setup. Reviews of the opening show have been overwhelmingly positive, unlike the return of The Police a few weeks ago. Genesis starts the North American portion of their tour on September 7th in Toronto.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Genesis’s formation, and it’s great to see that both the current band and Peter Gabriel are still rockin’ big audiences. The stage setup looks un-fucking-believable from the photos that follow, and many of the reviews spoke of pyrotechnics and tons of other special effects. Genesis has always been a leader in concert production by pioneering the use of lasers, vari*lite technology and the Prism sound system. If anyone sees a torrent of the Helsinki show, please let us know by leaving a comment below, so we can see if they really segued from Tonight, Tonight, Tonight into Invisible Touch.

Monday’s Hors d’Oeuvres & Weekend Setlists

The Wakarusa Festival went off without a hitch this weekend in Lawrence, Kansas. So far the reports have been positive, without mention of the police hassles and undercover surveillance. Hopefully the business owners realized the financial bonanza of 15,000 kidzz with disposable income coming through town when KU isn’t in session. We’ve got many setlists from the weekend after the jump.

In case you don’t want to jump back into work, we’ve compiled some links:

And don’t forget to read on after the jump for more weekend setlists than you can shake a stick at…why you’d want to shake a stick at them is beyond us.

moe.down Discovers Its Roots

moe. today released the final lineup for their eighth-annual moe.down festival in Turin, NY. The Roots, Ryan Adams and the Cardinals and Medeski, Martin, Scofield and Wood are the big names on the increasingly diverse lineup. And now that The Roots are on board, organizers can trumpet more than just musical diversity…

moe.down takes place the weekend of September 1st at the beautiful Snow Ridge ski area near Utica. Other major acts appearing this year include the Meat Puppets, the Ryan Montbleau Band, and Strangefolk. Early bird tickets are currently on sale for an extremely reasonable and worthwhile $95.

I went to last year’s moe.down and had an absolute blast — the great lineup and performances made me forget that it was pouring all weekend. I’m accustomed to Phish festivals, and it was very cool to attend a festival that had none of the hassles of the big boys. Everything was easy, plus they actually have working indoor bathrooms! The full lineup follows after the jump…

The B List: Best of the H.O.R.D.E.

We’re about to hit the 15th anniversary of the first H.O.R.D.E. tour, so we wanted to celebrate the occasion with a B List.

The Horizons of Rock Developing Everywhere festival was started in 1992 by Widespread Panic, the Spin Doctors, Phish, ARU and Blues Traveler as a way to present a new style of music to the masses. Each of the bands on that inaugural tour had big followings, but not big enough for them to break into the sheds for a summer tour. John Popper and Blues Traveler manager Dave Frey took the H.O.R.D.E. ball and ran with it for seven consecutive summers, offering different lineups each year. Many big artists rocked the festival, as well as many small acts that have grown into major players.

This week’s B List looks at the best bands to ever play at the H.O.R.D.E. during the traveling festival’s seven-year run. We’re going to assume you know all about these bands — so we’ll give you some background on their participation in the H.O.R.D.E. tour and tell you where they are now:

10. Bela Fleck and the Flecktones: The Flecktones joined the inaugural H.O.R.D.E. tour at a time when both the band and the festival didn’t have much name recognition. Phish was unable to play the second leg of dates on that first tour, so festival organizers called upon Bela to take their spot. The band played a brief four night-four show run that exposed the H.O.R.D.E. festival to the south. Fourteen years later the band is still going strong with the 2006 release of the Grammy-winning, The Hidden Land. Bela Fleck and The Flecktones kick off a full summer tour in a few weeks.

Read on after the jump for the remaining nine bands on this week’s B List…

Grousing The Aisles: DVD Edition

YouTube has done some good things and some bad things for music fans. Sure it’s great to be able to call up old footage in seconds, but the quality is pretty freakin’ crappy. Have you ever tried watching YouTube videos on anything bigger than a computer monitor? So those who like to watch full shows of high-quality video on their flat screens turn to torrent sites to download DVD files.

The Traders Den and Dimeadozen have hundreds of DVDs to download, burn and watch. If you have no idea how to burn a DVD, leave a comment below and I will help you through the process. If you don’t have a DVD burner, suck it up and pay the $40 to be able to download some amazing free vids. This week’s Grousing The Aisles looks at four great DVDs that you have to see to believe…

Smashing Pumpkins 06/02/2007 PRO-SHOT (DVD, MP3):

The Smashing Pumpkins reunion has been eagerly awaited ever since the first Zwan album was released. People were a little put off by the omissions of James Iha and D’arcy from the lineup, yet all of the early reviews have been good. Now you can judge for yourself by downloading the video (or audio) of the Pumpkins set from the Rock-Am Ring festival in Germany from this past Saturday night.

I was throughly impressed by the Pumpkins performance. Some of Billy Corgan’s new songs are destined to become anthems. The first single, Tarantula, has that classic Pumpkins sound that mixes the angst of grunge with the beauty of power-pop. Other worthwhile new tunes include Starz and Bleeding the Orchid, and the Pumpkins did a nice job of mixing in some old classics with the new material. Today, 1979 and Cherub Rock all sounded fucking awesome, bringing me back to my days in high school driving around and listening to Siamese Dream. Corgan and company return to the states later this month.

Read on for more great downloadable DVDs, as we go Grousing the Aisles…
