Finally, HT faves BuzzUniverse have spent the last few months in the studio, which didn’t leave the group much time for gigs. That changes later this week when BuzzU teams up with The Heavy Pets for a show at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ on Wednesday, the first show on the jam/world-beat act’s Spring Tour. The former Blips act will hit NYC, New Hope, Providence, Portland (ME), Cleveland, Indianapolis, Athens (OH), Kingston (NY) and Philadelphia by the time the tour comes to a close in May.

While Trey Anastasio still has five dates to go on this winter tour, it’s fair to say that this run of shows will remain memorable for years and years to come for its acoustic sets. I’ve never considered Trey a particularly good acoustic guitar player – certainly not compared to his contemporaries who regularly strap on a wooden ax: Warren, Bobby, Jake, Chuck, Al and the like. He mostly just strums a bit and plays mellow tunes – remember his sit-down request at Phish’s Festival 8?

Seeing him play acoustic has always been fun, but nothing too special, but this tour changed all that. He’s been out there every night playing a killer selection of songs – many of which have slight to bold changes in arrangement – singing his heart out, having the crowd sing its heart out too, and playing his guitar beautifully. It’s been magic.
With that in mind, here’s a mix of some highlights so far, a little something from every night. Especially noteworthy is the B-side here, the three-song run from early in the show at Albany. No audience has been so entirely right there with Trey and he responded in kind, just slaying the room with a glowing Number Line and the truly amazing risk of Limb By Limb on the fly – that was trust. And following that is the slick, nasty, reworked Cavern and stunning Harry Hood from Columbus. It’s a long one this week, so settle in and as always, enjoy!

As we mentioned earlier this month, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals have been on a roll of late. February was no different as the band played sold out shows in Boston, New Orleans, Atlanta and elsewhere. Fans in Dallas were given a special treat when Grace sang a duet with Scott Tournet of country star Kenny Chesney’s You and Tequila, a song that will appear on his upcoming album, Hemingway’s Whiskey.

Umphreys McGee is on a streak of its own, selling out 19 of its first 23 dates of 2011, including the past 10 straight shows on this month’s tour. Sit-ins on the tour have ranged from legendary pop-star John Oates to one-man-band Keller Williams to the mini-blues sensation – 15-year-old Jake Haldenwang. Keyboardist Joel Cummins left the fans with this final thought, “Thank you…best tour ever.”

The lineup for the first-ever Electric Forest festival has been released and features an eclectic mix of acts. String Cheese Incident will perform three shows over the course of the four-day event, which takes place at the Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury, MI on June 30 – July 3. Event promoters clearly went for the “we’re not like every other summer festival” feel for Electric Forest’s lineup as Dutch DJs Tiësto and Laidback Luke as well as Midwest rockers REO Speedwagon aren’t exactly doing the rounds this season.
Other acts on the electronica-heavy bill include Pretty Lights, Bassnectar, Shpongle presents The Shpongletron Experience and Kaskade. Representing the bluegrass element will be Railraod Earth, Greensky Bluegrass, The Infamous Stringdusters and the Emmitt-Nershi Band. For a taste of funk Lettuce and Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe will be on hand, while JJ Grey & Mofro, Steez and Rubblebucket add a rock flair to the event.
Electric Forest tickets go on sale this Saturday at Noon ET.
