Bob Dylan: Tsongas Center at U Mass Lowell, 4/9/13

Whether it be the opening of the tour or the change in the line-up, these recent shows have featured the same set list which is an oddity for Dylan, with the emphasis on his last few studio releases,  2012’s “Tempest”, 2009’s “Together Through Life” and 2006, “Modern Times”.  Regardless, Dylan seemed to be enjoying himself, not necessarily smiling but smirking. But that’s what makes Bob Dylan and if you’re a fan its always an honor to be in his presence.

Band of Heathens: Great Scott, Boston, MA 4/6/13

Despite having been named the best band in Austin, Texas along with a Top 10 American Music Association album for 2008, the critical recognition hasn’t always translated nationally for Band of Heathens. Being recognized as best in Austin is like being named best Mormon in Salt Lake City. As Austin is now the epicenter of the American music scene the title is no minor platitude.

Any music fan with knowledge of San Francisco’s turn-of-the-nineties “acid jazz” scene knows that Charlie Hunter and Scott Amendola share a lengthy and profound musical history. From the much-loved T.J. Kirk project to several of Hunter’s own records and other one-off collaborations, the pair has met frequently in their orbits through the music industry. Eric Clapton/The Wallflowers: New Orleans Arena, New Orleans, LA, 03/23/13

Surrounding himself by a large, absolutely fantastic, band, Clapton fell into his comfort zone, playing on tip-toes as the chords took over and settling back into a rhythm mode when Doyle Bramhall II or Paul Carrack took the reins. Clapton is a quiet leader, able to shine one moment, able to hide in the shadows, sans ego, sans flamboyance, another. In jeans and long-sleeved button-up shirt, he could very well just be heading out to the local Home Depot to pick up some gardening supplies. If you didn’t know this was Eric Clapton, he’d just be another you or me.

Having just wrapped up their first leg of the 2013 Winter Tour, Yonder Mountain String Band set their sights set on the western states with a swing through the desert valleys and mountain towns of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Montana, and Colorado. Their journey brought them to Flagstaff, Arizona to play their now annual show at the Orpheus Theater. White peaks, blue sky and a mountain sun greeted the band and bluegrass music-lovers in this picturesque mountain town. As if the weather wasn't adding enough excitement, Yonder Mountain had announced that Jason Carter of the Del McCoury Band would be joining them on fiddle. An old school, mountain jam was brewing.
