Girl in a Coma (with Justin Furstenfeld and Blue October): Ram’s Head Live, Baltimore, MD 4/1/12

Girl in a Coma is band that has shown tremendous growth since their debut five years ago.  While Both Before I’m Gone was a solid though not exceptional debut, it was the vast expansion of their sound on Trio BC and the significant dose of some good ol’ crazy on last year’s Exits and All the Rest, not to mention the ability to really make their mark on covers evidenced on 2010’s Adventures in Coverland, that makes them an incredibly exciting band.  Their ability to take their broader sound and really go off on Exits is what made this show so promising.

Dr. Dog: Higher Ground, South Burlington, VT 3/19/12

Dr. Dog stopped at Higher Ground on the eve of spring in support of their self-produced Be The Void, reaffirming the notion it’s as enlightening to follow this band’s progression by catching their live shows as obtaining their studio albums. In their second appearance filling the larger room at Higher Ground, the Philly eccentrics suggest their most recent recorded work project, is leading them in improvisational directions quite unlike their show here a year ago.

Anais Mitchell: Freight & Salvage, Berkeley, CA 4/4/2012

Backed by a band of such high caliber, watching Mitchell do this while on stage is a pleasure not to be missed– because if her career is any indication, this may be your only chance to catch these songs in these distinct forms before they transform into entirely new beings.

The Pink Floyd Experience: Tennessee Theatre, Knoxville, TN 3/7/12

The Pink Floyd Experience, a highly skilled veteran sextet from San Diego, is the most perfect kind of tribute band imaginable. Taking the stage late in the evening in Knoxville's grand, cathedral-like Tennessee Theatre, there was—thankfully—an absence of look-alike wardrobes, distracting make-up, and dated retro swagger.

Cults: Rhythm Room, Phoenix, AZ 3/19/12

Cults, a New York-based noise pop act that are a combination of several vintage sounds intermingling, sold out their show at Phoenix's Rhythm Room: it was definitely golden age syndrome in action.  The whole performance, which included Mrs. Magician and Spectrals as openers, was part surf-rock, part go-go, part doo-wop, part new wave, and altogether erratic. The vibe seemed to bounce from a Pulp Fiction-style chase scene to classic oldies’, serving only fitting that Dick Dale is slated to play the same stage soon.

Scott Pemberton: Doug Fir Lounge, Portland, OR 3/16/12

Two years ago, Oregon native Scott Pemberton was hit by a car while riding his bike and given little chance to live.  A long standing member of the Portland music scene, Scott made a miraculous recovery and committed himself to starting a “solo” career after years of session playing and various bands. This past Friday night at the Doug Fir Lounge in Portland, Scott and an expanded band celebrated the release of his debut album, Sugar Mama, with a downright raucous celebration of life, love, and guitar pyrotechnics.

Drive by Truckers: Crescent Ballroom, Phoenix, AZ 3/13/12

Although Drive by Truckers  have never been down and out like the protagonists of their songs, these musicians haven’t exactly driven an easy road either.  Last December, Shonna Tucker, their bassist since 2003 and lead singer of a handful of stellar DBT numbers, abruptly left the band.  If that wasn’t enough of a rock and roll cliché, the three guitar southern rooted rock band’s equipment truck broke down the night prior to Phoenix, forcing the band to spend the night in the snowy mountain town of Flagstaff waiting for a fix.
