Dinosaur Jr.: Bowery Ballroom, New York, NY 1/16/10

You can’t hear the vocals?!?  What fucking show do you think this is?!?!” Lou Barlow sarcastically yelled this to an ill informed fan midway through Dinosaur Jr’s ass-kickingly-loud concert at Bowery Ballroom on Saturday night in New York City…and really what the hell was that fan thinking?  This is Dinosaur Jr; beasts of feedback, lords of the distortion!

Dr. Dog: Higher Ground, South Burlington, VT 1/28/10

It's a pleasure to watch a band develop as songwriters, recording artists and performers, especially if their audience grows along with them. January 28th is the first time Dr. Dog's commanded the stage in Higher Ground's Ballroom rather than it's smaller Showcase Lounge and the audience filled the larger room comfortably. And happily too.

10 Great Moments from moe.

Benefit shows with pre-determined guests are by nature a skewed perspective: neither the band, nor the guests are in their regular elements, so you hope for the best, knowing you’ll get some fun collaborations heavy on cursory pleasure and maybe not a lot of deep-digging.Kudos to moe., then, for bucking the trend. Their 20th anniversary tour opened with impressive aplomb at Roseland Ballroom Friday, and thanks in part to a mix of well-chosen, well-utilized co-conspirators, the band was fun, groovy, limber and exploratory, with nary a dull moment.

The Duchess and The Duke: Mercury Lounge 1/9/10

Sporting silly fur hats The Duchess and The Duke took the stage at Mercury Lounge in New York City Friday night with only their whiskey soaked voices and a pair of acoustic guitars.  While the large noggin adornments may have been needed in the single digit night air, they certainly weren’t necessary in the full house for the early show which the group headed lined.

Leftover Salmon: Boulder Theatre, Boulder, CO 12/30/09

Twenty years ago on the way to Crested Butte, Left Hand String Band and the Salmonheads decided to join forces.  At that time they had no idea that it would last this long!  Hell, “had we known it would last 20 years, we would have picked a better name”,  Said Vince Hermann to the crowd of fans awaiting JAM packed night (pun indented)!   But for all the fans, there is no better name and no better sound than Leftover Salmon and the yell of Herman screaming into the night … “FESTIVAL!”

Jeff Tweedy: Orpheum Theatre, Phoenix, AZ 12/27/09

Matisyahu: Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY 12/19/09

Driving home from college Friday night my mind was fixed on one thing: making it to Matisyahu’s Festival of Light concert that was taking place in Brooklyn, New York on Saturday night.  Bad weather was surging throughout the east coast and emergency snow reports were forcing people to run for cover.  After waiting several months and enduring a long final exams week, the weekend finally came to go see Matisyahu at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in New York City.  Once I departed 30th Street Station, the only thing standing in the path was Mother Nature.
