The Harder They Come – Remastered

Hip-O/Universal Music Enterprises (UME) will mark the 30th anniversary of the U.S. release of the landmark reggae album “The Harder They Come” with a remastered, two-disc “Deluxe Edition,” due Aug. 5. The first disc is a remastered version of the soundtrack to the 1973 film starring reggae great Jimmy Cliff as Ivan, an aspiring musician turned gangster. Both the film and the 12-song soundtrack, half of which was comprised of his songs, went on to make Cliff an international star.
The second disc collects some of reggae’s most commercially successful singles to predate the April 1973 release of Bob Marley & the Wailers’ Island debut, “Catch a Fire.” Included are a number of additional tracks from the same artists on the original disc — Cliff (“Vietnam”), Desmond Dekker (“Israelites”) and the Maytals (” 54-46 (That’s My Number)”).

Earle, Kid Rock, ZZ Top Join Pearl Jam

At the DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan, on Thursday (June 26), Pearl Jam was joined by a couple of friends. Kid Rock, ZZ Top singer-guitarist Reverend Billy F. Gibbons, and Steve Earle were among the special guests, and a couple of them even made it on stage. Only one was by design, however–Earle joined Pearl Jam to play guitar on a show-closing rendition of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ In The Free World.”
Prior to that, however, Gibbons strolled to frontman Eddie Vedder’s microphone between the first and second encores to lead the crowd in cheering for the band’s return, and he was quickly ushered off by security guards. Gibbons had tried to take the stage earlier, but was restrained by Rock, who stayed in the wings all night.
At the show, Vedder dedicated Pearl Jam’s performance of “Better Man” to Detroit Red Wings hockey player Chris Chelios, who used to play for Vedder’s hometown team, the Chicago Blackhawks.

Telemarketer Blockage Service Starts

The federal government Friday launched a national “do-not-call” registry aimed at stopping most telemarketing phone calls to people who regard the sales pitches as invasive and want them blocked.
Within hours, 370,000 phone numbers had been registered, the Federal Trade Commission said. Officials said they expect 60 million people to register eventually.
Consumers can sign up online at http://www.donotcall.gov or by phone west of the Mississippi River — 1-888-382-1222 — for the registry, managed by the FTC. Nationwide registration by phone will be available next month.
