Shine A Light: Scorsese & The Stones

A bit of breaking news from the weekend to report: I walked by the side entrance of the Beacon Theater on Saturday morning to find an unusual amount of activity, especially for this early on a weekend. That’s when I saw Martin Scorsese walk into the building. Now that piqued my interest.

At that point I remembered reading that Scorsese would be filming the upcoming Rolling Stones concerts at the Beacon Theater. As I walked around the building I saw that the production team had blocked off a number of local blocks, and they were loading literally tons of equipment into the Beacon. On each blocked-off street, the crew members posted fliers explaining that Scorsese was filming a movie that “takes a behind the scenes look at the world of rock and roll.”

That’s the second thing that piqued my interest that morning, so I grabbed the signage from the post and did some classic investigating…

You never forget the first time you experience S.K. Thoth. Costumed like an ancient Greek superhero, complete with loincloth and a red feathered headdress, he is striking sight to behold. Then he opens his mouth and begins to sing in his three range operatic voice, with a violin on his shoulder, dancing like a man possessed by something otherworldly, stomping rhythms with his heeled sandals and belled ankles making an indelible impression in your mind.

In an effort to provide you with as much content on this blog as possible, First Lt. Scott Bernstein will scour the world wide web every week to bring you some of the best circulating torrents — both audio and video — that you may not have noticed floating around the information superhighway.

Since this post serves as the debut of this department, allow me to take a second to vouch for ScottyB. I recently bought a new iPod and delivered the unopened package directly to Scotty and his roommate, Coach, who then sent me an Excel spreadsheet with hundreds of gigs worth of sick live shows and awesome rarities. I picked out what I wanted and shot it back to them, stopping by a week later to claim a top-notch personal music device.

The point is this: ScottyB wants you all to accumulate a stellar music catalogue, and he’ll stop at nothing to accomplish that goal. Let him help you out, he knows what he’s doing here. So here’s the first installment, for the week of 10/23/06.
