I Love Bad Music: Oozing Down The Streets
HT Contributor Eliot Glazer has tremendously terrible taste in music. But he’s an adroit wordsmith, and he’s gonna try to convince us that the bad is really good. Way before Sex and the City, Natalie Cole turned Bruce Springsteen’s Pink Cadillac into a girly ode to naiveté, a song about which Carrie Bradshaw might ask […]
The Clientele : God Save The Clientele
The best thing that can be said about God Save the Clientele is that it’s so consistent that it’s quite scary. Whether you’re enjoying short gems like “Carnival On 75th Street” or the urgent feel on “No Dreams Last Night,” you feel as if they’ve been possessed by The Go-Betweens in their prime. A great album!
Eddie Vedder Scores Sean Penn Film
Eddie Vedder has reportedly written several original songs for a film directed by Sean Penn that is due out this fall. The Pearl Jam frontman wrote almost an entire album’s worth of songs for ‘Into The Wild’, which also features contributions from Academy Award-winning composer Gustavo Santaolla (Brokeback Mountain, Babel), reports the Playlist. Vedder will […]

Steve Earle will release his New West debut, "Washington Square Serenade," on Sept. 25, Billboard.com can reveal. The 12-track set was produced by the Dust Brothers’ John King and features a duet with Earle’s wife, Allison Moorer, on the track "Days Aren’t Long Enough." Also included on the album is a cover of Tom Waits’ […]
Stormy Mondays: Revolution!
The pyrotechnics this Fourth of July week come courtesy of Mr. Warren Haynes as he, like America, conquers the British [songbook]. Elton John’s Madman Across the Water comes from The Dead’s 2004 summer tour, which unfortunately was overshadowed by Phish’s demise (but the tour is filled with so many highlights that I’ll return to it […]
Monday’s Hors d’Oeuvres: RatDog > KimDog
As they say in Elaine Benes’ office, “Get well, get well soon, we wish you to get well.” A hearty “Get Well Soon” goes out to Mark Karan, who will be unable to join RatDog on its summer tour due to a lump on his neck that may or may not be cancerous. Karan will be replaced for an undetermined time period by Steve Kimock. As expected, Grateful Dead fans seem to be excited for KimDog, as evidenced by the SummerStage show selling out yesterday. Hopefully Kimock won’t bail on the tour after a few shows like he did to Phil Lesh in October of ’99.

Time To Short The Shit Out of AAPL?
It was supposed to be Apple’s finest hour, but this weekend’s absurdly hyped launch of the iPhone brought some serious complications for Steve “Mock Turtlenecks Rock” Jobs. Customers lit up help lines after activation delays plagued new buyers, and some AT&T locations successfully strong-armed shoppers into purchasing unnecessary accessories. Big sales, but headaches abound. There’s […]

Over the weekend, 7-Eleven Inc. turned a dozen stores into Kwik-E-Marts, the fictional convenience stores of "The Simpsons" fame, in the latest example of marketers making life imitate art. A Dallas, Texas, 7-Eleven has temporarily become a Kwik-E-Mart as a tie-in to "The Simpsons Movie." Those stores and most of the 6,000-plus other 7-Elevens […]

Jason Isbell is untethered and seems to be enjoying his new direction away from the Drive by Truckers. The Week That Was: Grey Skies Cleared Up
Another gorgeous weekend’s in the works, a blast of breezy sunshine pushing out the stormclouds that threatened our Friday post-work jaunt to South Street Seaport for a date with Sam Champion (and, for others, Ra Ra Riot). The coolest venue in the city played host to one of the coolest bands in the area, and […]
