HT Review: John Zorn @ St. Ann’s Warehouse

We’re honored to run this John Zorn review written by Jeremy Welsh. Jeremy comes to NYC via Pittsburgh and South Bend, and we hope to run more of his in-depth reviews in the future…

Up until Friday night, I had never had the pleasure of seeing the legendary John Zorn, play or conduct. The debut of his upcoming album The Dreamers in at St. Ann’s Warehouse was well worth the wait.

I should start by admitting that I am not too familiar with Zorn’s music. I think I first heard of the saxophonist/composer while on the Medeski Martin and Wood listserv; and for whatever reason, I was prejudiced simply because of his associations with “noise” or “squonk.” These past few years, though, I have grown to enjoy Masada when I hear it. And just this past year, I have really appreciated his 2001 album The Gift, which I was first turned on to by WNYC’s John Schaefer late one night. The Gift is a gem of an album, combining world music with Marc Ribot-lead surf rock — with a bit of everything else mixed in. Quite melodic and even quiet. (I have never really delved into his soundtrack or more exotica music.) Read on for more of Jeremy’s review…

So…you really can’t get further apart from each other than the members of the OM Trio. Bassist Pete Novembre lives in Santa Cruz, CA… keyboardist Brian Felix in Chicago, IL… and drummer Ilya Stemkovsky in Lakewood, NJ. When the opportunity to come together and play our first concerts in over three years arose, naturally, we knew we would have limited rehearsal time. Read on…

Joe Jackson : Rain

Joe Jackson is one of those few artists that despite getting on in years, he can still make biting music. Rain, recorded with three-fourths of the original Joe Jackson Band [ Jackson (vocals/keyboards), Graham Maby (bass/vocals) and Dave Houghton (drums/vocals)] in his new adopted city of Berlin is stripped to the bare essentials but sounds as youthful as any album in his 30 year career.

Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood: Madison Square Garden, New York, NY 2/28/08

In the most practical sense, Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood’s three-night run at Madison Square Garden is quite unlike the recent Led Zeppelin on show reunion or the comeback tour of The Police. These two esteemed musicians have some unfinished business: Blind Faith, the band they created and then lost control of stands as the most significant case of arrested development in the history or rock and roll.
